PGY2 Ambulatory Care Program

The Arcare PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency Program builds upon the Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) education and successful completion of a PGY1 residency to develop advanced clinical pharmacists in ambulatory care practice. Graduates of the program will be equipped to:

  • Function independently as practitioners in a variety of ambulatory care settings.
  • Conceptualize and integrate accumulated experience and knowledge into the provision of patient-centered care.
  • Pursue advanced clinical positions in academic or non-academic environments.
  • Attain board certification in ambulatory care (BCACP).
Program Overview

Arcare’s PGY2 residency is housed within a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) network, offering unique training across diverse patient populations and practice areas. Residents experience high-impact, pharmacist-delivered care in clinics that serve patients with chronic and complex conditions.

  • Immersive longitudinal ambulatory care experiences in asthma, COPD, diabetes, hypertension, HIV, viral hepatitis, and behavioral health.

The program ensures residents achieve the required ASHP PGY2 Ambulatory Care competency areas, goals, and objectives, including:

  • Patient Care: Providing advanced, evidence-based care across a wide variety of chronic disease states.
  • Advancing Practice & Improving Care: Designing, implementing, and assessing innovative pharmacy services. Building lifelong skills in self-assessment, scholarship, and leadership.
  • Leadership & Management: Leading clinical initiatives, policy development, and interprofessional collaboration.
  • Teaching, Education, & Dissemination of Knowledge: Precepting pharmacy students and PGY1 residents, teaching in academic or community settings, and participating in structured certificate programs.

Elective experiences are tailored to resident interests and preceptor availability, with current option for population health elective.

Teaching & Research Certificates

Residents may participate in optional teaching and/or research certificate programs offered through the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.

Sample Weekly Schedule
  • 2 days per week: chronic disease state management clinic days
  • 2 days per week: HIV and Hepatitis C clinic days
  • 1 day per week: Advanced Asthma/COPD clinic day.
  • Protected time: Built into the schedule for research, leadership, and teaching (generally ~1 day per week).
  • Note: The schedule may be adjusted based on program requirements, electives, and individual development needs.
Professional Development & Mentorship

Residents engage in a structured professional development series, including:

  • Individualized development planning with program leadership.
  • Quarterly mentor check-ins and feedback sessions.
  • Opportunities for leadership training, public speaking, and advocacy.

    • Residents gain experience across multiple sites, reflecting the diversity of patients and practices within Arcare’s Federally Qualified Health Center network.

  • PharmD degree from an ACPE-accredited college of pharmacy.
  • Completion of, or active enrollment in, an ASHP-accredited PGY1 pharmacy residency (or one in candidate/pre-candidate status).
  • Eligibility for licensure in Arkansas.
  • Participation in PhORCAS® and the ASHP Resident Matching Program.
