Colorectal Cancer Screening: A Simple Step That Can Save Your Life

Colorectal cancer (cancer of the colon or rectum) is one of the most common cancers and a leading cause of cancer death in the United States. The good news? Regular screenings can help find cancer early — or even prevent it before it starts.

Why Screening Matters

Screening looks for signs of colorectal cancer before symptoms appear, when the disease is easier to treat. It can also find precancerous growths (polyps) so they can be removed before they turn into cancer. Studies show that effective screening lowers deaths from colorectal cancer and can reduce the number of new cases.

Who Should Be Screened
  • Most adults should start colorectal cancer screening at age 45.
  • If you are older than 75, talk with your Arcare provider about whether screening is right for you.
  • You may need to start earlier or be screened more often if you have:
    • A personal or family history of colorectal cancer or polyps
    • Inflammatory bowel disease (like Crohn’s or ulcerative colitis)
    • Certain inherited conditions that increase cancer risk
Types of Screening Tests

There are several ways to screen for colorectal cancer. Your health care provider can help you decide which option is best for you:

Stool-based tests
These tests check your stool (bowel movement) for tiny amounts of blood or abnormal DNA that could be a sign of cancer.

  • FIT (Fecal Immunochemical Test): annually
  • Cologuard (stool DNA test): every 3 years

Visual exams
Procedures like colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy allow doctors to look inside your colon and rectum and remove polyps during the same visit.

  • Colonoscopy: every 10 years
  • Flexible Sigmoidoscopy: every 5 years

Important: A positive FIT or Cologuard test must be followed by a diagnostic colonoscopy to complete the screening process.

Talk to Your Provider

Screening is a partnership between you and your health care team. If you’re due for a colorectal cancer screening — or if you’re unsure — please contact your nearest Arcare clinic. They can answer your questions, discuss your risks, and help you choose the right test for you.

Remember

Regular screening saves lives. Starting at age 45 and staying up to date with recommended screening is one of the best things you can do for your long-term health.
